The Hitt/Turpin Genealogy Page

I have collected genealogy information from the Hitt side of my family from my aunt Lucile Hitt Hollingsworth. She, in turn, got some of her information from my grandfather, Joel Reuben Hitt, but added a lot of her own work. The information on the Turpin side comes primarily from my sister-in-law Betty Turpin Harvey.

My Parents

Both of my parents, Joel Reuben Hitt, Jr., and Evelyn Eddleman Hitt, died recently. They were both beautifully eulogized at their funerals by my brother, Joel R. Hitt, III. The text of his remarks are included below.

An Athletic Dynasty

My father, Joel Reuben Hitt, Jr., and his three brothers all attended Mississippi College from 1925 - 1939. Each was a good all-around athlete, each lettered in four different sports, and each played professional sports after college. After my father's death, I found a description he had written around 1980 that briefly described their athletic achievements.

Our Father's Way with Words

In 1984, my brother got the idea to compile several of my father's colorful expressions. By Christmas of that year, we had about 100 pages worth. We call this effort Our Father's Way with Words.

Other Old Photos

As I go through my parents' papers, I occassionally find an old photo of interest to me. I will post them as I get them scanned. Other relatives have also contributed photos.
